In our July 2022 Feature Truck of the Month, we noticed an approximately 7” x 7” metal plate covering a square hole in the center floor board of the 1936 Chevrolet Panel Truck. This vehicle looks almost untouched in regards to changes over the years. It was used for light weight deliveries as most panel trucks were purchased to do.

Why is there a metal plate covering about a 6” x 6” square hole in the middle wood floor plank? (A 1936 Chevrolet Panel Truck is “so unusual” in today’s world, we know of none for comparison.)

Yes, it is above the differential that holds the ring and pinion assembly, but this hole is only about 6 “square. We see no relationship between the two.

It will remain a mystery until a mid-1930’s panel truck owner steps up with why this exists OR if it was added after the panel’s purchase. Stay tuned!

Looking up at the square hole.
