We at Jim Carter Truck Parts are occasionally asked if an original 1937 under seat tank will fit in their 1938. This question is asked because the 1937 tank has been reproduced, however, the 1938 has not.

We asked a good customer that has personally restored a show quality 1938 Chevy ½ ton. It is a show quality award winner at the shows he attends. Here is his words when we asked this question.

Letter attached:

“I’m sure a ’37 gas tank would fit into a ’38; and, maybe even up to ’46 but let’s not push it. The main difference in the ’37 and ’38 is the top, where the 37’ has the bung hole screw top used to fill the tank after lifting the passenger side seat cushion; I would suspect the bottom halves of each tank are the same. Not sure when the 38’ tank actually began to be used in the 38’, I don’t think it was with the first 38’ built, and have heard it took maybe a couple months to work it into production, remember there had to be a hole put into the side of the cab to allow the filler pipe to connect to the tank, and the 38’ tank had to have the top retooled so that the filler pipe could connect to the tank.”
