This Suburban was purchased new by my grandfather, Ross Fleming, for use in his retail appliance business located in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada.

My Grandfather and my Uncle Donald boarded a Canadian Paciﬁc Railway passenger train, steam powered at that time, headed east via the Crowsnest Pass line through the Rocky Mountains towards the General Motors factory at Oshawa, Ontario.

After probably at least a ten-day journey, they arrived in Ontario. When paperwork was complete, the journey from Oshawa to Nelson began. They traveled across the border to the U.S.A. and headed west towards Spokane or Colville in Washington State as the highway system was much more developed in the U.S.A.

Upon reaching either of those two cities after probably two weeks journey, they headed north to Nelson which would have been another day’s journey.

Upon reaching Nelson, it began work for many years as a delivery vehicle for the General Electric Appliances my grandfather sold and later as a groceries delivery vehicle. In those days, many families did not own a motor vehicle, so groceries were often delivered by the grocer.

The vehicle was retired when my grandfather retired although that did not mark the end of its service life. Since my father was Scout master of the 3rd Nelson Scout troop, he used the vehicle as a bus to transport his Scouts to many of their campsites, or to the head point of a multi-day hiking camp.

I remember going out in the winter in search of wild Christmas trees in that vehicle. After tramping through snowy forests, we harvested many trees and had the back of the vehicle stuffed with greenery.
